Rebonds A

for multiple percussion

Composer: Iannis Xenakis
Year: 1987-1989
Duration: 6 minutes

Iannis Xenakis was one of the foremost composers for percussion of his generation. In startk contrast to the philosphies espoused by Cage and the New School, Xenakis opted for a mathematical approach or a stochastic method to composition. Rebonds A, one of two movements written for Sylvia Gualdo in 1987-1989, represents an exercise in polyrhythmic study. The movement provides a relentless pulse that is merely embellished by varying levels of polyrhythms and rhythmic density. As the movement progresses, a sort of man v. machine theme emerges, as the performer attempts to physically navigate the complicated material that is so machine-like, always moving forward.

In contrast, Rebonds B is more groove-based than density-based. Regardless, due to the relatively simple setups, and relentless rhythmic drive, Rebonds A and B is sure to remain in the solo percussionist's repertoire for generations to come.
